Three Myths of the Spiritual Life

by Subhuti (2003)

In this talk given at the 2003 Western Buddhist Order Convention (originally titled 'Immanence versus Transcendence') Subhuti addresses his thinking on three myths of the spiritual life, namely self-development, self-surrender and self-discovery that he believes are expressed in all schools of Buddhism, although with differing emphases. He outlines the expression of the three myths in the Buddhist tradition and in 'culture' and points out the dangers and the correctives for each myth, as well as discussing the three myths in Sangharakshita's teaching.
