Romantic Buddhism

by Silavadin (2020)

'When I give a sense of infinity to the finite, then I romanticise it'. These words of the poet and thinker Novalis are leading in this talk about the romantic movement. Its broad historic outlines and leading ideas are sketched, and how it shaped the reception of Buddhism in the West. How romantic is modern Buddhism, specifically in Triratna? It seems that romanticism and Buddhism can be a fruitful and happy connection, but there are also things to be careful about.

This talk was given during the Philosophy Symposium at Adhisthana in 2020.
