Experience and Non-Experience Revisited

by Matt Drage (2020)

In this talk, Matt Drage returns to Bhante's classic 1975 lecture, "Enlightenment as Experience and Non-Experience," arguing for its continued relevance for understanding the way we view Buddhism. Drawing on his PhD research into the development of "mindfulness" meditation since the 1970s, he describes how and why the idea of the spiritual life as an "experience" has remained at the centre of recent presentations of the Dharma. Building on Bhante's analysis, he explores the possible benefits and dangers of thinking of enlightenment, and the spiritual life, as an "experience".

This talk was given during the Philosophy Symposium at Adhisthana in 2020.
