Exploring sati (mindfulness) as the central spiritual faculty, Vajradevi describes its qualities, stressing the quality of mind that is being aware, rather than the objects of mindfulness. Sangharakshita defined mindfulness as ‘an intelligent, responsive awareness to ever-changing conditions’. Using the metaphor of a naturalist, exploring things in their natural habitat, Vajradevi describes looking at the body-mind in its natural state, not trying to make things happen. Calling on Einstein and Aesop, she evokes the quality of receptivity needed for the practice.
