Vajradevi introduces the idea of rains retreat with some reminiscences of practising in Asia and how the idea of a ‘rains retreat’ goes back to the time of the Buddha. She describes how her approach emphasizes a continuity of practice wherever you go, whatever you do, so that even if people aren’t able to be present at the centre, they are still part of this ‘mandala of practice’. She encourages those taking part to substitute just sitting for reading, listening to radio or TV during the retreat and reflected on ways to reduce the impact of technology. She invited those taking part to dedicate themselves to the ‘twin and warring gods of precision and wild abandon.
