Buddhism and Psychotherapy

by Mitrananda

How does Buddhism compare with western psychotherapies? Are they all actually using rather similar and overlapping methods, or are their approaches quite distinct? Is the goal of Buddhism really any different from what counselling or psychotherapy can achieve?
Or is Buddhism so diverse in its different schools and approaches that such questions are facile anyway? Could the same be said of any attempt at such comparisons because of the many and diverse types of psychotherapy?
Mitrananda is a psychiatrist who has worked for many years in UK mental health services. He has also been on the receiving end of psychotherapy.
