Dharmadipa wird zum kenntnisreichen Führer durch das Dickicht verschiedener japanischer und chinesischer buddhistischer Richtungen aus der Zeit um 1200. Die Person Dogen wird lebendig durch die unprätentiöse und zugleich sehr genaue Schilderung seiner Biografie und spirituellen Entwicklung. Seine originelle Persönlichkeit gewinnt im Laufe des Vortrags mehr und mehr an Kontur und damit erfährt man zugleich vieles über die unterschiedlichen Wurzeln und Methoden des Zen-Buddhismus.
Der Vortrag wurde 2001 im Buddhistischen Zentrum Essen gehalten.
