After 42 years building and working with the FWBO, and the release of his new book, 'The Essential Sangharakshita,' Bhante gets at the most fundamental message of it all - spiritual development.
He reflects on the beginnings of the FWBO and how it has developed over time, working around the needs of Western Buddhists and the zeitgeist of the times. Then, he lays out the first three great stages of the spiritual path. The first stage is awareness of self and integration, as well as awareness of others and our surroundings. The second stage is one of emotional positivity, stepping outside of ourselves. Third is spiritual death, and cultivation of unselfishness.

42 Jahre lang hat sich Sangharakshita dem Aufbau und der Entwicklung des FWBO gewidmet und kürzlich wurde sein neues Buch „The Essential Sangharakshita“, herausgebracht. In diesem Vortrag nun konzentriert er sich auf die Kernbotschaft des Ganzen: Spirituelle Entwicklung.
Er erzählt von den Anfängen des FWBO und wie er sich im Laufe der Zeit den Bedürfnissen westlicher Buddhisten und dem Zeitgeist angemessen weiterentwickelt hat. Danach erläutert er die ersten drei großen Abschnitte des Spirituellen Pfads. Im ersten Pfadabschnitt, dem Stadium der Integration, wächst das Gewahrsein für uns selbst sowie für andere Menschen und unsere Umwelt. Der zweite Pfadabschnitt ist der von emotionaler Positivität. Der dritte Pfadabschnitt ist der spirituelle Tod, zu dem auch die Kultivierung von Selbstlosigkeit gehört.
Sangharakshita hielt diesen Vortrag anlässlich des FWBO-Fests im April 2009 in Essen. Der Vortrag wurde ins Deutsche übersetzt.
